Send Your Brains On Chhutti My Review Holiday : A Soldier Is Never Off Duty

Director :  AR Murugadoss

Starring :  Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha, Sumeet Raghavan, Freddy Daruwala, Govinda

The dumbing down of the film begins with its title itself. Kindly don't trouble your brains, the film is about a soldier Virat Bakshi (Akshay Kumar) who reaches Mumbai for a holiday and lands up in the middle of action, fighting terror, because, yes, a soldier is never off duty. He also lands up straight to "see" a girl for marriage, Saiba (Sonakshi) who he rejects instantaneously because she is too shy, has long hair and looks old fashioned. Virat has his close friend cum side-kick Sub Inspector Mukund (Sumeet Raghavan) who constantly berates that Virat meddles too much with his cases. As they travel in a bus ( blame it on Akshay falling for the same girl he had rejected) and as they are checking people for a lost wallet, the bus blows up in a powerful blast. From here the hunt for the Sleeper Cells and the head of the entire operation begins, with Akshay single handedly masterminding the entire plan. Please do not read too much into the fact that he is actually a part of D.I.A, ohho not C.I.A but Defence Intelligence Agency of India and they normally would work systematically to address this issue and there is protocol involved. Heck, don't mind the police officer friend who apparently is clue less about what sleeper cells are, and as bodies drop around mumbai, the police is not showing any interest, why? Because, Akshay is the Hero, OK?

Once you forget logic and reality and procedure and say yes to this brand of thriller, punctuated with flash appearances of the heroine to sing and dance with our never off duty soldier, you would probably enjoy the film. There is an intricate plan that Virat puts together, underlined by large doses of patriotism. Will he be able to save Mumbai, India and the Army from the invasion of terror? Well, let me not spoil the suspense.

The film sees Akshay return to pure action, and he still can kick butt, there is no doubt about that. He is the fittest actor in his age group. He carries the role and his conviction in what he does shows.

Sonakshi has very little to do, and this one is another one in her kitty of smile and dance your way to the 100cr club films, the villain (Daruwala) looks like he would break into " Dude, I am getting late for dinner, ma is waiting" and leaves no impact. Zakir Hussain is totally wasted in the film.

The film also sees an obviously aged Govinda in a cameo, but he does try to liven up the scenes.

Murgadoss, the director has his pulse on the masses, and what will work for them, that is reinforced in the film. The action is executed well, some gripping sequences and the dialogues work in most places.

The camerawork of the film is another plus, catching action and chases with finesse, Natarajan is in his elements here.

The music by Pritam is a let down, none of the songs stay with you.

So if you are an Akshay fan and like action films, you will not be totally disappointed with this thriller. But if you are the ones to ask " Baki sab toh theek hai, par Police kya kar rahi thi" I suggest go buy a pizza instead.

My Verdict  2/5

The Tiger Tales My review Heropanti

Director  Sabbir Khan

Starring   Tiger Shroff, Kriti Sanon, Prakash Raj

In 1983 Subhash Ghai gave us Hero, one of the most memorable films of Jackie Shroff, 31 years later his son Tiger Shroff makes his debut with Heropanti. I am dropping a big hint there, and no, it is not about how "original" this film is.

The buzz was humungous, everyone was waiting for this star son's debut to roll out.

Heropanti as the name suggests is about, well, Tiger's display of all the facets that an Indian hero needs to portray to woo the entertainment seeking janta. Film main action hai, romance hai, Melodrama hai, yahan tak ke "bachaao bachaao, nahiii nahiiii" scene bhi hai!

The story is straightforward enough. Bablu (Tiger) helps his friend and his girlfriend run away from an arranged marriage. The girl's father Chaudhary jee (Prakash Raj) and his entourage of Jat goons of the Khap-land capture Bablu and his friends and go on a hunt for the girl and her boyfriend. Bablu falls head over heels in love with Bapu jee's younger daughter (So much for surprise). How will this intense love story end, oh come on, we all know THAT!

Ok, let's talk about Tiger Shroff, the kid has excelled as far as the action goes. He jumps, kicks, leaps over buildings, walls and packs a punch. His body is chiseled, albeit he could have done with a foot or two in the height department. Very impressive there, I must say.

His acting, now that is something he would really, really need to work upon if he wants to stay around longer. His constant smile, his baby pink lips and a faraway look in his eyes even in some serious melodramatic scenes, that will need to change, especially when there are much more talented youngsters around like Arjun and Sushant. But does Tiger make a mark, yes he does. He has screen presence, a certain coolth and an innocent vibe which works in his favor.

Kriti Sanon is good looking and has a great bod, and to me she and Tiger looked good together. But her role is so stereotypical that even if she is a good actress, I wouldn't know from this film.

Prakash Raj, aah, the the omnipresent baddie in all the southern remakes, oh, yes, Heropanti is a remake (It is so cliched that it is a mish-mash of not one but many films, especially DDLJ)  of Parugu, a 2008 Telugu film. His character roars, makes scary eyes and then towards the end... even holds hands with Bablu. SO cute na.

It is obvious that this film had one purpose, to launch Tiger Shroff, and package him in a film where everything else becomes a distant, very distant second. Like the story, screenplay, logic etc. And to that end, it doesn't fail. Sabbir Khan has ensured that you do accept Tiger Shroff, even if you  reject the storytelling.

Good music, even when the songs just come up like a pop-up ad on your browser (read random) and cinematography make it bearable. I really like "Raat Bhar".

The length of the film is another minus. Specially when it is filled with too much melodrama and predictable plot twists. Oh, and the Big Hint was about the signature flute piece from Hero, which has been used till it comes out of your skin.

End Note : Go watch it for some cool stunts by Tiger Shroff and if you are a Jackie Fan like me!

My Verdict  2/5

Heropanti The Pappi Song Video Tiger Shroff Kriti Sanon

Sabbir Khan directed the very forgettable Kambakkht Ishq so I am worried already about Tiger Shroff, legendary Jackie Shroff's son. In Heropanti he debuts with Kriti Sanon.

I can not make anything non-formulaic out of the promos so far. Here is the latest music video from the film, The Pappi Song.

Ek Villain : Galliyan Song Video Sidharth Malhotra Shraddha Kapoor

After Hasee Toh Phasee, which I quite liked, Sidharth Malhotra is back and this time in a Mohit Suri film.

Ek Villain is looking interesting from its trailers. Paired with Shraddha Kapoor, who gave the stupendous hit Ashiqui 2 with Mohit Suri earlier, Sidharth's choice of films is exciting.

Here is the song Galliyan from the film. Enjoy!
